SaaS socialism

· One min read

I've never heard a paying SaaS customer complain that their subscription subsidizes free users.

That's just the model. Those who can pay cover those who can't, or won't. Everyone gets access, and the whole system becomes more useful.

Call the same arrangement a welfare state, though, and suddenly it's controversial.

Of course, free tiers aren't charity. They're acquisition. The paying users expect to benefit eventually.

Perhaps that's the difference. Or perhaps capitalism just has better product marketing.
